FAQ – Frequently Asked Questions
On installation and functionality.
How will the eLog be installed?
The hardware comes with the software being installed ready to be used. A comprehensive guidance which also may be downloaded from our website is part of the delivery. Ship’s engineers or electricians are able to install the hardware and to connect it to the vessel’s network without much effort. For more information please click here.

What does the delivered gateway computer provide?
The gateway computer hosts the eLog-software, provides a main- and a back-up storage SSD. Access to the software is attainable with a web-app using any computer connected to the gateway computer, directly or via the ethernet.
Which flags have approved the eLog, permitting the replacement of conventional hardcopies?
The criteria for use of electronic logbooks instead of hardcopies vary considerably between flags. Some flags leave it to the owner to install compliant logs, others insist on a type-specific approval. Some flag states require a type approval by a recognized organization added by an application of the company for every ship. We are constantly monitoring the legal requirements and update our website as soon as new information is available. For more information please click here.
Are there differences between MARPOL-related books/modules and other log- and record books?
MARPOL-related books must comply with MSC.Res.312(74) while Deck-and Engine Logbooks must comply with DIN ISO 21.745:2019. The latter technical standard exceeds those of the MARPOL-regulation. For other books/modules it depends on the regulations set by the administration. Anyhow, the Formularus-Anschütz-eLog complies with both standards, therefore covering all modules at present and in the future.
How can the eLog be integrated into existing bridge configurations?
The eLog complies with IEC 61162-450 on the transfer of navigational data, thus allowing data exchange with equipment from other manufacturers.
Which logbooks are currently available as eLog?
Please click here for current availability.
Can I use my gateway computer on board a ship for which it was not originally bought for?
Yes. In this case the general set-up of basic data will be aligned and a new license key must be purchased.
How can new modules be added?
The licence applies to the purchased portfolio of modules, which are Basic, Advanced or Full. To switch to a higher package with more modules a new licence-key must be purchased.
Do I need a separate key for each module?
No, the key is valid for all modules which are included in the purchased package.
Are new modules available independently from the basic deck logbook?
Yes. Each module may be purchased independently from others.
May I connect the eLog to the vessel’s ethernet?
By means of the ethernet an almost unlimited number of computers can be connected with the eLog’s software hosted on the gateway computer.
Why do we need the gateway computer?
Our gateway computer is certified according to the DIN ISO 21.745:2019 and complies to IEC 60.945. Computers that do not fulfill these requirements cannot be used for the hosting of electronic logbooks. Nevertheless, the access to the software on the gateway computer is permitted by use of any standard computer via the ethernet.
What is the license key for?
The software is installed on the gateway computer prior to delivery. Your license is activated by entering the license key or activated automatically via the cloud.
How long is the license valid for?
Licences are issued for one year. They are purchased independently from the hardware.
How long is a further subscription of the license?
Contracts will continue automatically, if not cancelled within 2 months.
What will happen to my data, if I do not continue my subscription or if my vessel is sold or scrapped?
The data will remain on the storage-SSDs of the gateway computer and in the cloud.
Is there a cloud solution?
The cloud solution comes with the standard license for the eLog and is based on blockchain technology.
Where from does the eLog get the basic navigational data?
Basic navigational data is supplied by the AIS. Any other information such as weather or navigational data may be received via the ethernet.
Can the eLog be connected to the vessel’s Satcom?
Yes, the eLog is designed for that. Data can be transferred into the cloud where it is stored by means of blockchain technology.
What hardware is required for the eLog?
The eLog requires the gateway-computer. The gateway-PC is compact and fits into any given bridge console. To operate the eLog any fixed computer or mobile device which is connected to the ship's network is needed. In a stand-alone configuration one computer maybe connected to the eLog as a single work station as well. The eLog on the gateway-PC is operating like a WebApp. Users on their devices connect to the gateway-PC by means of their standard internet browser. Therefore, the handling is similar to complete a form in the internet.
How is the eLog updated?
Updates will be provided in the cloud. On-board-users receive an automatically generated message and the user initiates download and installation.
For gateway-pc’s without SatCom-connection the updated software must be downloaded from the Raytheon-Anschütz-Partner Area and transferred to a workstation being connected to the gateway-pc. The software will be installed using the eLog-web-app.
What is the storage capacity of my data in terms of years?
The data can be stored for at least 5 years.
Is there a back-up?
An SSD-drive of 64 GB is part of the gateway computer. Data is stored via satcom in a cloud, operated with blockchain technology.
To which standards must the eLog comply to?
Electronic Logbooks must comply to DIN ISO 21.745:2019, standards and IMO-requirements. Part of this norm are numerous IEC-requirements, which exclude the use of standard computers for the hosting of the software.
